How Registration Works
Community Impact

The Community Impact Commitment

The Community Impact Commitment is a required part of the Ruta del Jefe experience. In addition to the registration fee, each participant is required to contribute a minimum of $275 to support organizations working to protect, restore, and strengthen the landscapes and communities of the borderlands.

Funds raised through the event directly benefit:

Participants may fulfill the Community Impact Commitment by fundraising from friends, family, coworkers, and community members, by contributing the amount themselves, or by combining both approaches. Participants will have several months leading up to the event to complete the commitment.

To help reduce barriers to participation, scholarship recipients and Mexican nationals residing in Mexico are encouraged to participate in fundraising but are not required to meet the minimum Community Impact Commitment and will not be charged for any unmet amount.

More than a fundraising requirement, this process is intended to deepen participants' connection to the region and the organizations whose work they will learn about throughout the weekend. By sharing Ruta del Jefe's mission with their communities, participants help raise awareness of the people, places, and issues that make the borderlands such a unique and important region.

To encourage participation and celebrate the collective impact of our community, Ruta del Jefe offers prizes for top fundraisers. Past prizes have included three bicycle framesets and other contributions from event partners and sponsors.

To make the process approachable and successful, participants will receive fundraising tools, templates, guidance, and ongoing support throughout the fundraising period.

Priority Registration

To help build a community that reflects the diversity of the borderlands and the broader cycling community, a limited number of registration spots are reserved for Priority Registration.

Priority Registration is available to:

  • Mexican nationals residing in Mexico

  • BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) participants

  • LGBTQIA+ participants

Priority Registration provides early access to registration before registration opens to the general public.

Participants interested in Priority Registration must complete a brief application during the registration process. Selected applicants will receive a registration invitation and unique registration code.

Please note that Priority Registration provides early access to registration, not guaranteed entry. A limited number of spots are available through this phase and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis among invited participants until those spots are filled.

Applications for Priority Registration will open in Fall 2026 alongside scholarship applications.

Access Fund

We believe that cost should not be the only thing determining who gets to participate in Ruta del Jefe. To help make the event more financially accessible, we offer a select number of Access Fund tickets at a significantly reduced registration price.

The Access Fund works similarly to a sliding-scale pricing model. The true cost of producing Ruta del Jefe is shared across the event community: general admission tickets are priced slightly higher, allowing a limited number of participants to attend at a significantly reduced rate. This allows us to expand financial access while still covering the real costs of producing a four-day event.

Access Fund tickets are intended for people who would otherwise be unable to attend Ruta del Jefe at the full registration price. Participants must apply for an Access Fund ticket before registration opens. Applications will be reviewed in advance, and selected applicants will be notified before registration begins.

Those selected will receive a private registration password that allows them to purchase one of the available Access Fund tickets at a significantly reduced price.

Receiving an Access Fund ticket does not change the participant experience. Access Fund participants receive the same registration benefits, meals, programming, camping, rides, workshops, and event experience as all other registered participants.

Access fund applications will open in the fall of 2026, prior to registration.

Scholarships

Ruta del Jefe is committed to reducing barriers to participation and creating opportunities for a diverse range of individuals to engage with the borderlands experience.

10 Scholarship Recipients Receive:

  • Complimentary event registration

  • Exemption from the Community Impact Commitment

  • Travel stipend support based on demonstrated financial need

Scholarships are intended for individuals who would not otherwise be able to attend Ruta del Jefe without financial assistance. We welcome applications from people who are engaged in their communities, passionate about stewardship, education, advocacy, or leadership, and from those seeking opportunities to learn, grow, and bring new perspectives and experiences back to their communities.

As part of our commitment to building a community that reflects the diversity of the borderlands and the broader outdoor community, Mexican nationals residing in Mexico, BIPOC participants, and individuals who identify as transgender are especially encouraged to apply.

Applications are reviewed holistically, considering financial need, lived experience, community involvement, and the potential impact participation may have on the applicant and the communities they serve.

Scholarship applications will open in Fall 2026 alongside Priority Registration applications.
